Squeak! Squeak! Squeak! Sunny Handydandy was mending a broken camping stove at Bitty Fix-It Shop, using a new screw to reattach the handle.
Earlier that day, lots of customers had visited the store and they had lots of things that needed fixing! Luckily, mom Mimi was helping Sunny out with the jobs, sewing a ripped tent and straightening out some wonky glasses.
As they worked, an idea started brewing in Mimi’s head.
She would have to think quickly if she wanted to get her plan together before everyone returned to collect their items.
“Sunny,” she said softly. “How do you feel about a little surprise for our customers?”
“Ooooh, what kind of surprise?” squealed Sunny.
“Well, you know how we like to reduce, reuse, and recycle? I’m thinking of creating a Bitty-Fix-It Workshop so that everyone in Honeysuckle Hollow can learn how to repair things!” said Mimi. “I think our neighbors would like some tips and tricks on how to mend all their broken items so they don’t get thrown out.”
“What a great idea!” beamed Sunny. “We can do a little test run today when the customers come to collect their stuff.”
“Exactly,” answered Mimi, with a wink. “But we’ll need some help.”
Just then, Benjamin and his son, Nibbles, came from the back room. “Another job done for the day!” exclaimed Benjamin, dusting his hands.
“Anything else that needs to be done?” asked Nibbles.
Sunny and Mimi giggled. “Just in the nick of time!” laughed Mimi, and she started to explain her plan.
She told her family what she needed:
A big wall chart
Chairs
Notepads and pens
And with that, everyone got to work, setting the workshop up for their customers.
As soon as the clock struck 5pm, there was a flurry of noise at the door. Maverick GrayPaws, Eloise Vanderhoof, and Pete Whooswhoo had all arrived at the same time to collect their items!
“Welcome, all!” greeted Mimi. “We have sealed your tent, mended your camping stove, and fixed your glasses. Now, would you like to know how we did it?”
Maverick looked at Eloise, and Eloise looked at Pete. “Sure!” they agreed.
They took a seat and watched as Mimi gave a presentation on the 4 Rs: Reducing, Reusing, Recycling, and, most important of all, Repairing!
She went around the group with examples, showing Maverick how to sew, teaching Eloise how to use a screwdriver, and explaining to Pete how to adjust wire with a pliers.
At the end of the evening, all of the customers had learned something new.
“This was great!” said Eloise.
“Yeah!” agreed Pete. “I love learning new things!”
“Thank you so much, Mimi!” said Maverick. “Can I come back next week?!”
“Of course!” giggled Mimi. She winked at her family, knowing the Handydandys would have a fun few weeks working together at the Bitty Fix-It Workshop!
Tune in next week for a brand-new Storytime series all about caring and friendship!
