When Kelly Quickquack first went off to school – she was a little bit nervous. She did not know what to expect. Would there be lots of crowds? What if she did not know the answer when her teacher asked an important question, or what if she did not know where to go? Kelly had many worries.
“There’s nothing to worry about!” Mom Cappy assured her. “School has so many things to be excited about – just you wait and see. You will make new friends! You will learn new and exciting things! And, when the year ends, you will not believe how much you have grown!”
“Yes,” agreed Dad Quincy. “It is normal to feel a bit of butterflies before something new. But you are brave, and you are going to do great!”
Kelly realized that they were right and after her first year of school. All the things they had said were true! She still got some butterflies during back-to-school, but she came up with a plan to ease her way into each new school year. Her good friend Wally Whiskerelli also had nervous feelings, so they decided to make a plan together and meet on the first day.
On the first day of the new year, Kelly Quickquack was feeling great. She had made a small checklist to prepare for the big day, and keeping herself organized like that made her feel confident. On her checklist were the first three items:
- Make favorite lunch for school: peanut butter and jam sandwich on whole wheat, no crusts.
- Set out favorite polka dot dress and matching shoes.
- Double check alarm clock for 8 am.
Kelly had given herself a triple check for these items. Once she was on the school bus, she started to get excited to meet Wally. They had decided to meet at the hop-scotch game in the school yard. Wally was right on time too and she could see him strolling over and waving.
“Wally! I am so happy to see you,” Kelly called out. “I missed you this summer!!”
“I missed you too Kelly,” Wally replied. “I had such a fun summer full of relaxing and playing games. At recess I will tell you all about it! Shall we look at our plan for today?”
Kelly took out her small ‘First Day of School’ list and read aloud the next two items for the first day of school.
“Let’s find our lockers and set up our desks!” Kelly said with excitement.
“Yes! I can’t wait to decorate my locker!” said Wally – who was known for his funky locker decorations.
Both friends held hands as they headed in to pick out a locker for their belongings.
The two friends found lockers close to each other and just as they did the, bell rang for class to begin.
“Hi Wally and Kelly! Welcome back!” their teacher, Suzy Tippytail, grinned and welcomed them with open arms.
Wally and Kelly took their seats and set out their pencil boxes. Each friend positioned their notebooks and crayons on their desks just so.
“How do you feel, Wally?” Kelly asked.
“I am feeling great, actually!” Wally beamed. “This was an awesome plan to buddy up and make ourselves a checklist. I am feeling ready to learn!” he said.
“Me too!” Kelly agreed. “This is going to be the best year of learning yet!” And with that, Kelly and Wally opened their books. They were ready to get started.
