April showers bring May flowers! When it rains, your Li’l Woodzeez friends like to get together and make crafts in their cozy homes. Keeping li’l hands busy is great for sparking creativity, and when the crafts are done, they can be shared with those you love!
Here are 5 easy, rainy-day crafts for kids that celebrate spring rain.
Take Watercolor Outside
With this rainy-day activity, you get to use the rain to your advantage! All you need to do is let your kiddo draw on watercolor paper, then leave the drawing out in the rain for a few minutes. Use watercolor crayons or pencils for a mess-free craft or use your traditional watercolor paints and brushes. Zig zags, swirls, and patterns create a magical effect. If you’d like, you can even take this idea outside and paint in the rain!
Paint the Windows
Paint? On the windows? Why, of course! Breaking the “rules” is so much fun. For this activity, lay out a drop cloth in front of the window, storm door, or sliding door of your choice, then use painter’s tape to protect the frame. Bring out some brushes and washable, water-based kids’ paint for your kiddo to use on the glass, and voila! This is a great way to use rainy weather as a wonderful canvas. When you’re ready to part with your child’s masterpiece, simply wash it off with dish soap and a wet sponge.
Make Happy Hues
Here’s another craft that uses rain. This time, invite your kiddo to draw something on a sheet of paper, making sure that it has a plain backdrop, such as the sky. Cover the drawing in strips of watercolor tissue paper, then leave the project in the rain. Watch the paper soak for a few minutes, then bring the masterpiece inside. Remove the tissue paper and ta-dah! Beautiful, homemade art.
Use Bubble Wrap to Make Rain
Add decorative rain to any work of art with a piece of bubble wrap and some paint! Simply paint some bubble wrap with blue washable paint, bubbles side up, then flip the sheet over and press the bubble wrap onto a sheet of paper. This makes a fun, out-of-the-box print that is more hands-on. Plus, it recycles packing materials!
Create Coffee Filter Umbrellas
Got some paper coffee filters? Use them to make an adorable, rain-themed piece of art. Simply fold a coffee filter in half and staple it shut. Decorate with paint, stickers, markers – you name it – then attach a curved piece of pipe cleaner to the bottom to make an umbrella handle. Tape or glue the umbrella to a canvas, and there you have it! Combine this rainy-day activity with the bubble wrap rain and you’ll have a mixed media masterpiece.
