Heads for the Hills

The Curlicue Pig family and the GreyPaws Wolf family are close friends. Over the years, the Grey Paws have helped the Curlicue with many supplies for their restaurant, Pass-the-Pasta – including cans of tomatoes and noodles. Every year the families plan a winter getaway and this year they will go skiing on the Honeysuckle Hills. The families had been planning it since the fall, so when the day came, they were ready with their checklists and their cars packed with supplies for the slopes.

“What should we do first thing when we get there?” Roberto asked the group.

“Let’s unpack in the rooms and regroup around a hot cup of cider” said Luna GreyPaw.

The drive went by fast as all the kids played, “I spy” in the back seat of the car. Toby and Olive Curlicue and Miles and Meg GreyPaw took turns pointing out different colors in the passing  landscape. They all admitted it was easier in the wintertime because there was so much snow that colors stood out brightly. After a big bend in the road, all the kids let out an excited gasp. The rolling snowy Honeysuckle Hollow hills stood in front of them.

“Oh my! Look at how beautiful the hills are!” said Miles.

“Are you all excited to play in the snow?” asked Maria Curlicue.

“Yes!!!” the children cried.

After a cup or two of hot cider by the fire in the lodge, the two families planned a day of snowy adventure. Maverick loved the slopes and was the most experienced skier of the whole group. He would head to the mini hills and join Toby, Olive, Miles and Meg while they learned how to ski. As they were headed up toward the chair lift, Olive slowed down behind them.

“What’s wrong Olive? Don’t you want to go down the hill?” asked Maverick.

“Well… actually, I do not like heights! When we were in the lodge – it did not look so high but now standing underneath the hill …” Olive’s voice trailed off.

Maverick had an idea. He whispered for a moment with the supervisors at the chairlift and they nodded their heads with smiles.

“Olive, instead of going down the hill – would you like to tour the hill from the seat of the chairlift together?”

“Yes, please!” Olive was delighted by this idea.

Maverick hopped on the chairlift and held Olive’s hand in her paw. They took a trip over the hills and watched as their family members skied down. Olive was brave enough to wave. Sitting side by side with Maverick, Olive really enjoyed the view.

Once the temperature started to drop, the GreyPaw and Curlicue families gathered their belongings to head back to the lodge. The day had been sunny and full of fun but everyone was tired from skiing and looking forward to some rest. All cozy in their pajamas around the fireplace, they played board games and sang songs.

“I have an announcement” Olive piped up during a card game of Go Fish.

“What is your announcement?” asked mom Maria Curlicue.

“I think… I think tomorrow, I will try and go down the hill!” Olive said.

“Yay!” all the kids clapped and applauded Olive’s change of heart and courage.

“We will go together,” encouraged Meg GreyPaw. “Slope by slope, it’s only uphill from here.”
