“Hoot, hoot!” called Pete Whooswhoo as he looked out over the tops of the tall trees in the forest.
The Whooswhoo Owls ran the Nighty-Night-Sleep-Tight Service in Honeysuckle Hollow, keeping an eye on all their neighbors.
They were the first ones to spot a potential accident, alert the town about bad weather, and even solve mysteries!
Pete and his younger sister, Peep, were keeping watch while their parents took a break.
Suddenly, Pete spotted something odd. What was that? He picked up a pair of binoculars to get a better look.
A broken light? A shiny metal object? A fire? A FIRE!
“Mom! Dad” he shouted, ringing a bell to raise the alarm. Delores and Owen came running up the stairs as quick as lightning.
“What is it, dear?” asked Delores.
“A fire, mom!” answered Pete. “It’s right in the middle of the forest!”
Delores took the binoculars to see for herself. “Well, it doesn’t look too big for now. It could just be a campfire. But we will check it out just to make sure.”
“Better safe than sorry!” agreed Owen.
The Whooswhoo Owls locked up their watchtower and headed to investigate their latest mystery.
They trekked through the forest, trying to find the exact spot they had seen the flame.
“What’s this?” asked Peep, pointing to a green tree.
“It’s a fir tree,” replied Delores. “It’s evergreen, which means it keeps its green color all year round, even in winter!”
“And what are these?” asked Pete, gesturing to some purple flowers.
“Those are coneflowers,” answered Owen. “They’re part of the daisy family and some people use them to help cure a cold!”
“Awesome!” said Pete. “Nature is so cool!”
After a short while, the Whooswhoo Owls heard some laughter in the distance. They headed towards the giggles until they reached a clearing in the trees with a camper parked nearby.
It was the Vanderhoof Moose Family!
“Oh, hi guys!” called Madox Vanderhoof. “What a lovely surprise! Would you like a s’more?”
“Well, that’s kind of why we’re here,” said Delores. “We spotted your fire from our watchtower and we came to investigate.”
“We hate to be spoilsports,” chimed Owen. “But it can be very dangerous to have an open fire in the forest so we wanted to make sure everything was OK.”
“Oh, of course!” said Eloise. “We just forgot our camping stove and thought we’d make a fire of our own.”
Just then, Pete reached into his back pocket. “You mean THIS camping stove?” he said.
“Oh my!” chuckled Madox. “Where did you find it?”
“We saw it over there, on the ground. It must have fallen out of your bag!” said Pete.
The two families laughed together. Looks like the Whooswhoo Owls had solved yet another mystery!
Tune in next week to join the Handydandy Family at Bitty Fix-It Shop!
