The Sky’s the Limit

For weeks now, Liv Skyhopper had peered out of her window each morning looking for the sun to appear. In winter there were many different weather conditions – snow, clouds, sleethail and strong winds that meant flights out of Sunny Skies Airport came to stop. Sunny Skies Airport is the airline run by Liv Skyhopper’s parents Roger and Flora. Naturally, Liv loves to fly. Finally, March has arrived! And Liv knows what that means.

“Today is the day!” Liv announced over breakfast as she dug into a stack of pancakes.

“What day is that?” asked her brother Skip.

Flora and Roger looked at each other with a twinkle in their eyes.

“It’s true!” Flora exclaimed “Today is the first day of March – which means spring is around the corner.”

“Yes,” chimed in dad Roger “And that means the Junior Pilots Club will begin again with meet-ups!”

Liv and Skip cheered, and Roger and Flora clapped. Everyone loved the Junior Pilots Club and the chance to share their passion for flying with their friends in Honeysuckle Hollow.

The first meeting was scheduled in a week and in preparation, Liv had a few surprises to add to make their reunion even merrier. In the evening, Liv put out all her craft supplies on the floor.

“What are you doing?” asked little brother skip. Skip was always very curious about what his big sister was doing.

“I am making everyone their own set of pilot wingsAfter they complete the sessions, they will get to keep them!” explained Liv.

“What are pilot wings? Are they the wings on the plane?” Skip asked.

“No, but you are thinking in the right direction. The pilot wings are a symbol of hard work and training! Like a badge or an award, it is earned!” Liv explained as she began cutting the wings out from colorful construction paper. Each person would get a different color

The first week of the Junior Pilots Club, everyone gathered at Sunny Skies Airport. The day was clear and there was not a cloud in sight. Although no planes would fly out that day, the club members had a gorgeous sun for their first meet up. Everyone was buzzing with excitement and lots of new members were there.

“Good afternoon Junior Pilots Club members!” shouted Liv overtop of the laughter and chatting. “I will begin today by taking roll call!”

Skip wanted to take part. Liv gave him the clipboard to check off the names as each attendee raised their hand.

“Henry Bushytail”

“Present”, a voice called from the crowd as a hand went up.

“Dixon and Tucker FitzMoo

“Here”, the duo of FitzMoos cried.

And down the list they went until all members were accounted for.

“Welcome all to the first Junior Pilots Meeting! This year we have something extra special to work towards at the end of the course.”

The crowd of kids whispered in awe. What could it be?

“Last year, we taught you all about flight plans and jobs at the airport! This year, we will continue our learning and at the end of the classes – each successful student will get a chance to fly – side by side with Roger or Flora.”

There was an enormous cheer from the crowd.  Liv had one last surprise for their first day. She brought out a small board that was cover and peeled back to reveal eight sets of pilot wings.

“These are your pilot wings! You will get to wear them on your first flight as a reward for all your challenging work!”

“Well, what are we waiting for?!” said Tucker who had come prepared in a white pilot-style hat that day.

“Yes, up and away we go! It’s time for these club meetings to take flight!” Liv laughed before announcing with her arms outstretched to the sky, “Let’s begin Junior Pilots!”
